Swirled grey and white subway tile in a brick pattern under a rustic wood-beam hood, above a pro cooktop

Kitchen Backsplash Tile in Framingham, MABacksplash tile cut to the outlet.

Subway, arabesque, glass mosaic and swirled tile, set around hoods, outlets and lights.

Backsplashes

A backsplash is small and everyone sees it.

A backsplash sits at eye level, right behind where you cook.

Every cut and every joint is in plain view.

The wall is full of interruptions.

Outlets, switches, a hood, a window and the cabinet line all cut into the pattern.

We set kitchen backsplashes in ceramic, porcelain, glass, marble and stone.

Swirled subway, arabesque, herringbone and mosaic medallions are all jobs we have set.

Send a photo of your wall and the tile you like.

We will tell you plainly what it takes to make it look right.

What we set

What we set behind the counter.

  1. Swirled subway under a beam hood

Long swirled tile in a brick pattern, run under a rustic wood-beam hood, with every row held level.

  2. Subway and arabesque

White subway meets a stone counter in one clean line.

Arabesque, also called lantern, adds shape above granite or under a steel hood.

  3. Mosaic medallions

A mosaic panel centered over a gas cooktop on a plain subway field.

The layout starts from the cooktop so the panel sits true.

  4. Glass and mirrored mosaic

Glass mosaic bands behind a range, and mirrored pieces over a dark counter that catch the light.

  5. Herringbone

A grey herringbone behind a sink, cut so the pattern keeps its angle out to the edges.

  6. Dry bars and small walls

The same swirled tile inside a lit dry bar, and other small walls away from the kitchen.

Before you pick

Four details to settle first.

These are the spots where a backsplash goes right or wrong.

We would rather talk about them before the first tile.

  • Outlets and switches

Every outlet cuts a hole in the pattern.

A thick tile can leave an outlet sitting back from the surface.

The box may need to come forward.

  • Under-cabinet lights

Light that skims across a wall shows every high spot, and glossy tile shows it most.

Tell us where the lights and the wiring go so the tile edge is planned with them.

  • Where the tile stops

It can end at the cabinet bottom, run up to a hood or go to the ceiling.

That line decides the layout, so pick it early.

An open edge needs a trim or a finished tile.

  • The joint at the counter

Tile meets the counter at a corner that moves a little.

Grout tends to crack there, so a flexible joint in a matching color is the usual answer.

American Tile installed a beautiful, glass backsplash in our kitchen. We had purchased the tile separately without Rodolfo’s advice, and we made an error in our selection of tile and grout combination. Rodolfo found the best solution, did the job (with great difficulty), made it right and we ended up with a gorgeous backsplash for Christmas entertaining. I would definitely call him again for our next tile project.

Questions

Asked about backsplashes.

Can you set backsplash tile I bought myself?

Yes. Glass needs care, because what is behind it can show through.

One customer bought glass tile separately, and the tile and grout combination turned out wrong.

We found a solution and made it right.

Do I pick the grout before the tile goes up?

Yes, choose them together. Grout color changes the look as much as the tile does.

With glass, the grout and the setting material behind it show, so those get settled first.

Does the backsplash go in before or after new counters?

Most often the counters go in first, so the tile can meet the finished edge.

If you have a fabricator, tell us the plan and we will work out the order with you.
